This short and sweet trip takes you up to Coldstream Canyon on the west end of Truckee, near Donner Lake. It's especially convenient from our NEW store location at Citizen's Bank Plaza on Donner Pass Road, and is a favorite evening loop from the store. Even though the distance is short, the climb is substantial, and it can be very technical at times. Good bike handling skills are a plus.

From Citizen's Bank Plaza, take Donner Pass Road to the west over the Freeway and turn left at the stop sign, past the gas stations and hotel, and through the gate into Donner State Park. Follow this road for about a mile, where it will begin to climb. On your left is a more technical climb that turns into a single track, so if you're feeling warmed up, that's an option. Whether you stay on the road or the trail, at the top of the hill will be a single track heading off to your right. Start climbing, and get ready for lots of switchbacks.

You'll crest out on a dirt road, turn left and head down the road a few hundred yards. Before you reach the bottom, look closely for a trail heading off to the right. Take this and climb some more to your high point (the dog dish gives it away). From here, you'll descend steeply and technically down to the railroad tracks, with some challenging rock sections at the bottom.
Once down on the tracks, you can choose to double your pleasure by re-tracing your route, or you can head over the tracks and continue a short way til you reach a dirt road heading back down canyon. Follow this road all the way back to the start.
